Sculptra (Poly-L-Lactic Acid)
Unlike gels that give an instant result, poly-L-lactic acid stimulates the skin to build up volume over time. That slow timeline is the main point for travelers: one visit is not a full course, and the full effect appears long after most itineraries end.
How it works
Sculptra contains tiny particles of poly-L-lactic acid, a biodegradable material, which is injected into deeper layers of the face. It is thought to prompt the body to produce its own collagen over the following weeks, leading to a gradual gain in volume and firmness. A course is often two to three sessions about four to six weeks apart, and results can last up to around two years, varying by person.
Who it may suit
- Gradual volume loss across the cheeks and temples
- Skin that looks thin and slack
- People who prefer a subtle, slow change over an immediate one
- Longer stays or repeat visits to Seoul
The treatment day
- Face assessment. The doctor checks the pattern of volume loss and whether a gradual stimulator suits you.
- Preparation. The product is mixed into a diluted suspension, and numbing cream or local anesthetic is used.
- Injection. The suspension is placed in several areas using a needle or cannula, followed by massage as instructed.
- Follow-up sessions. Further sessions are usually spaced several weeks apart, adjusted to how your face responds.
Aftercare
- Massage the area as the doctor instructs, often several times a day for a few days.
- Use cold packs for swelling in the first day.
- Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and alcohol for about two days.
- Take photos in the same light on each visit to track changes.
- Keep a record of the number of vials and sessions.
Things to know first
- Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common for a few days.
- Small lumps or nodules can form and may take time to resolve; correct massage and dilution lower the risk.
- Vascular occlusion is rare but serious and needs immediate medical attention.
- Results appear slowly and cannot be easily reversed.
- Not suited to pregnancy, breastfeeding, active infection, certain autoimmune conditions or a tendency toward keloid scars.
Planning Sculptra around a Seoul trip
A full course needs several visits spaced weeks apart, so a short trip rarely covers it. Realistic options are to begin the course on a longer stay, to spread sessions across two visits to Seoul, or to ask the doctor whether another approach suits a brief visit better.
Massage instructions matter. You will need to follow the routine for several days after each session, so ensure your hotel and schedule allow it. Because the full effect appears after you have gone home, take clear photos beforehand and ask for written records of the plan.
Sculptra (Poly-L-Lactic Acid): common questions
Can I have the whole course in one trip?
Only on a stay long enough to fit the sessions, often a month or more. Otherwise sessions may be split across trips, which the doctor can discuss.
When will I see a difference?
Change builds gradually over weeks to a few months. You will not see the final result by the time you fly home after one session.
Can a doctor at home continue my course?
Possibly, if they use the same product. Bring a record of what you had and let them decide.
