Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal uses light energy to reduce hair growth in treated areas. Sessions are quick and recovery is minor, but the full plan spans many months. For travelers, the question is whether to start now, finish later, or choose a different route entirely.
How it works
The laser targets pigment in the hair shaft and follicle, heating it so that growth slows. Only hairs in their active growth phase respond, which is why several sessions weeks apart are needed. Results vary by hair color, thickness, skin type and body area, and hair usually becomes finer and sparser instead of vanishing entirely.
Who it may suit
- Dark, coarse hair on the underarms, legs, bikini area or face
- People tired of shaving or ingrown hairs
- Those who can complete a series of visits
- Someone with a trip long enough to start the schedule
The treatment day
- Skin and hair review. The provider considers hair color, skin tone, recent sun exposure and medicines.
- Shaving and test spot. The area is shaved, and a test pulse may be used to choose settings.
- Laser pulses. Pulses are delivered over the area with cooling to protect the skin.
- Soothing. A cooling gel or cream is applied and care instructions are given.
Aftercare
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning on the treated area
- Use sunscreen and loose clothing
- Skip waxing, plucking and bleaching between sessions
- Avoid hot baths and saunas on the day
- Moisturize if the skin feels dry
Things to know first
- Redness, bumps and mild swelling around follicles are common and short-lived
- Burns, blisters, darkening or lightening of skin are possible, especially with tanned skin
- Light, white or gray hair often responds poorly
- Pregnancy, certain medicines and active skin conditions in the area need review
- Hair can regrow, and maintenance sessions are sometimes needed
Planning laser hair removal around a Seoul trip
Sun is the main planning issue. A tan from a beach day before arrival, or a palace walk right after treatment, raises the risk of skin color change. Ideally, start the process before sun-heavy travel and keep treated skin covered for the following days.
Sessions are normally spaced about four to eight weeks apart, so a short stay may include just one. Starting a series and finishing it elsewhere is possible, but settings, devices and records differ between providers. Bring or request session notes, and be prepared for a new provider to run test pulses.
A small area, such as underarms or upper lip, can be a reasonable starting point on a short stay, while full legs usually need more time to judge. Avoid scheduling just before a beach trip or long hours of strong sun on the way home.
Laser Hair Removal: common questions
Do I need to shave before the appointment?
Often yes, in the area to be treated, but follow the clinic's instructions. Avoid waxing and plucking beforehand, since the laser needs the hair root.
Can I treat tanned skin?
It increases the risk of side effects, so the provider may postpone or adjust settings.
Is it worth one session on a short trip?
Some hair may thin, but a single session usually gives limited reduction. Whether to begin is worth discussing with the doctor.
Is it safe for all hair colors?
No. Lighter hair is harder to target.
