Fat-Dissolving Injection

These injections target small, stubborn pockets of fat, such as under the chin. The swelling can be significant and last for a week or more, and a series is often needed. That makes careful timing important for visitors.

How it works

A solution, often containing deoxycholic acid or similar ingredients, is injected into small fat deposits to break down fat cells. The body then clears the debris over weeks. It is used for small areas and is not a weight-loss method. The amount of change varies by person and area, and several sessions are often needed.

Who it may suit

  • A small pocket of fat under the chin
  • Localized bulges that resist diet and exercise
  • People near a healthy weight with limited fat
  • Stays long enough to fit repeat sessions

The treatment day

  1. Examination. The doctor checks that the bulge is fat rather than loose skin or muscle, and reviews your health.
  2. Marking and numbing. The treatment area is marked, and numbing cream or ice may be used.
  3. Injection. Small amounts are injected in a grid pattern. A burning or stinging feeling is common.
  4. Swelling phase. Firm swelling usually peaks within days and settles over one to two weeks.

Aftercare

  • Apply cold packs as directed during the first day.
  • Wear loose clothing and avoid tight collars on the treated area.
  • Avoid heat, saunas and strenuous exercise for a few days.
  • Stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol for a day or two.
  • Contact the doctor for severe pain, skin breakdown or numbness.

Things to know first

  • Swelling, bruising, tenderness and numbness are common.
  • Nerve injury near the jawline can cause temporary weakness of the lower lip; skin ulceration is rare.
  • Results vary, and not everyone is a candidate; loose skin may look more noticeable afterward.
  • Not suited to pregnancy, breastfeeding, active infection or certain medical conditions.
  • It is not a treatment for general weight loss.

Planning fat-dissolving injections around a Seoul trip

Swelling under the chin is hard to hide, and can last longer than visitors expect. Treat as early as possible, and avoid scheduling it near a conference, wedding or flight home. A second session usually needs a gap of weeks, so a short trip typically allows one.

Because a result takes weeks to appear, you will probably fly home before seeing the final effect. Ask the doctor how many sessions your area may need and whether that plan is realistic for your travel pattern.

Fat-Dissolving Injection: common questions

How long does the swelling last?

It often peaks in the first days and settles in one to two weeks, though it varies by person and amount.

Can I fly after treatment?

Flying is usually possible, but you may be uncomfortable with swelling. Ask the doctor about your case.

Will one session be enough?

Often not. The doctor can estimate after examining the area.
