TCA CROSS for Icepick Scars

TCA CROSS applies a strong acid to individual icepick scars to prompt rebuilding from within. Travelers should know that the crusts look like tiny dark dots, that sun and picking raise the risk of marks, and that sessions are spaced several weeks apart.

How it works

A small amount of high-concentration trichloroacetic acid is placed into each narrow scar using a fine applicator. The acid causes a limited, controlled injury inside the scar, which turns white and then forms a small crust. The body heals the area and may build new collagen from the bottom up, raising the scar. Only small, deep, narrow scars are targeted, and results vary. Several sessions a month or more apart are typical, and some scars improve more than others.

Who it may suit

  • Narrow, deep icepick acne scars
  • Small, defined scar spots rather than broad areas
  • People who accept visible dots for several days
  • Those who can plan a series of visits

The treatment day

  1. Scar mapping. The doctor identifies which scars suit the technique, checks for active acne or infection, and reviews skin tone and healing history.
  2. Cleansing. The skin is cleansed and degreased so the acid stays where it is placed. Numbing is usually not used, as brief stinging is expected.
  3. Acid placement. The acid is applied to each scar until it frosts white. The visit takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
  4. Neutralizing and instructions. Cooling and a soothing product are used, and you are told how to treat the crusts.

Aftercare

  • Expect small dark crusts for about 5 to 7 days; let them fall off on their own
  • Do not pick, scrub or peel the crusts, as that raises the risk of marks
  • Use sunscreen and avoid strong sun, since new skin darkens easily
  • Keep skincare gentle and pause retinoids and acids until healed
  • Avoid heavy makeup over the crusts unless the doctor approves

Things to know first

  • Possible effects include stinging, redness, crusting, dark or light marks, infection and, if misapplied, new scarring
  • Results vary, and some scars improve only partly or not at all
  • Active acne or infection, isotretinoin use, pregnancy and keloid tendency may rule treatment out
  • Darker skin tones are more prone to post-inflammatory darkening and need conservative strengths
  • Acid strength and technique require an experienced doctor, not home use

Planning TCA CROSS around a Seoul trip

Dark dots on the cheeks are noticeable up close, so schedule this early in the stay. Many travelers manage ordinary tourism while the crusts are present, but they avoid hot, sweaty or sunny days when the areas feel irritated. Covering with makeup is not always recommended, so decide how much the dots matter for planned photos.

The series structure is the main constraint. Treatments usually take place four to six weeks apart, and you will likely have time for one during a brief visit. Ask how the doctor would judge your scars after the first treatment, and whether alternatives such as laser or subcision are advised for your type. If you plan to continue elsewhere, bring the acid concentration, number of spots and notes on how your skin responded.

TCA CROSS for Icepick Scars: common questions

Will I have to hide the dots?

Small dark crusts last roughly a week. They are noticeable at close range, and the doctor can say whether makeup is appropriate.

Is it right for all acne scars?

No. It is aimed at narrow, deep icepick scars. Broad rolling or boxcar scars usually need other approaches.

Can I travel by plane a day after treatment?

Usually, but leaving a few days lets you see how the crusts form. Moisturize and avoid touching them.

How do I avoid dark marks?

Do not pick crusts, use sunscreen and follow the doctor's guidance. Skin tone and individual healing also play a part.
